It creates shared communication and consolidates resources by having a shared library of assets for both design and development. decreasing design and development times, allowing smaller teams to achieve more. In my experience, I have seen a system work so well as to give a developer a list of requirements, they build it using prebuilt components and then I come in and pixel push of r an hour and we have a solid, crafted new piece of a product.
